Primary hypertension is a chronic medical condition in which the arteriole blood pressure is constantly elevated with no apparent medical cause such as kidney diseases, tumors or medication side effects.
Among animal models of hypertension, the spontaneous hypertensive rat (SHR) is one of the most commonly used animal models in cardiovascular research including primary hypertension. These rats exhibit elevated blood pressure beginning at 6 weeks of age.
Telemetry methods allow for the continuous and stress-free measurement of blood pressure parameters including diastolic, systolic, mean arterial pressure, pulse pressure and pulse and are therefore ideal for use with the SHR model. The ability to monitor blood pressure in a home cage environment provides a significant advantage compared to other methods such as tail cuff. Once implanted and activated blood pressure telemetry probes can provide data for up to 6 weeks.
Blood pressure telemetry in animal models of hypertension can be used in mice or rats and is therefore applicable to other animal models in cardiovascular research including model of atherosclerosis (hypertension atherosclerosis; atherosclerosis blood pressure).
